Are You A Beauty Queen Or A Wanna-be?

Last September 12, 2011, another Filipina proudly represented the country in the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant. Shamcey Supsup, 25 years old, a licensed architect (ranked 1st on the licensure exams, by the way) who hailed from General Santos City, gave her best shot and left millions of Filipinos breathless in excitement and pride during the competition.

Then, the result of the dreaded question and answer portion gave the wanna-be’s a chance to criticize our very own candidate. The question was “Would you change your religious beliefs to marry someone with an opposite view?” She says no, “because the first person I love is God, who created me…if that person loves me, he should love my God too.”

To the “smart-alecks” that satisfied themselves by egotistically criticizing Shamcey so as to feel that they have a lot more to offer than what she has given to the pageant, let’s just keep it simple. You’re still no better because if you are, then we should be seeing you on stage and no one else. If you think you have what it takes to represent the Philippines, please audition and let’s see if the judges will appreciate what you can offer. If we got the 4th place, so be it.

In this kind of competition, judges will always have biases and usually dependent on their own beliefs and principles. If they did not agree with Shamcey’s answer, does it mean that she gave an idiotic answer? Judges are also human, entitled to like and despise anything that’s brought to their plate. They may be placed there because of their credentials but it doesn’t mean that they should push objectivity.

Shamcey may not have satisfied their expectations but with an answer that she believed was right and was based on her principles, she has delivered without taking advantage of extra time via an interpreter. I personally think that the other top 4 finalists didn’t need interpreters to answer the questions for them. For sure, they understood the first time that these were thrown at them. Besides, Miss Universe is a pageant that promotes goodwill. I think they’re all equipped with even just the basics of the English language in order to be effective communicators for unity’s sake.

In a couple of months, Shamcey will be over and done with the criticisms and instead be very preoccupied of the endless opportunities that won’t just be limited to the perks of being a beauty queen. As with the wannabe’s, I guess they’ll just wait for another opportunity to devour the next courageous one who will try to make every girl’s dream come true, to be the most beautiful woman of all. I guess the pathetic thing is, while waiting, they’ll just chew on just about anything so long that they can be noticed even for a minute, such a far cry from becoming someone of real importance.

agree! or i may say, crab mentality exists gid sa culture ta.. one newscaster said ” ngayon ko lang na-realize that hindi pala bulls eye yung sagot niya but oo, maganda tlga siya.. i so hate it. For me, her answer didn’t make her less as a person & im proud sa kanya! 🙂

Very true Mahal. Sometimes we result to crab mentality solely because we’re not happy about ourselves. Too much insecurity eats a lot of our senses.
